My wife and I took a cruise to Hawaii then south to Fanning Island in Kiribati. I soaked in the warm atoll waters for pure pleasure until I stepped on a rusty Spam can. The only medical care there was a nurse with little equipment. She dug the sand out with a needle. I had not worn my shoes, so I had to get my shoes, go back and have the sand dug out again.
True story. The island had very little elevation and is imperiled by global warning. Interesting history of the island and its people – check Wikipedia if interested. Worried all the way home because I thought I might get tetanus and couldn’t remember when I’d had my last shot.
